Chapter 9: Virus Showdown - Part 3

As the fire streaked towards her only daughter, Sora cried out and tried to leap to her aid. But there was no time. The split second in which the fire struck Sonya stretched out like an hour in Sora and Tai’s eyes. But as the blaze exploded into a mass eruption of smoke and pavement, a single streak of light beamed from its midst...

*Beyamon, digivolve to...Keetmon!*

A gust of wind kicked up, and the smoke and ash were blown away, revealing Sonya crouching unharmed behind a green bird-like digimon about the same height as her. It flapped its large wings, which beared streaks of bright pinks, blues, and yellows. Both its taloned feet and small beak were the same orange color, and it had bright round eyes. Just above them stood a tuft of feathers that dangled slightly forward like hair.

“Don’t worry, Sonya,” Keetmon said with a cheerful chirp, “Keetmon’s here to protect you!” Keetmon looked to DarkTyrannomon and narrowed its eyes a bit. It flapped its wings, which Sonya noticed seemed to also act as his arms, and Keetmon lifted into the air towards the vile dinosaur.

Sora breathed out a heavy sigh of relief, and after momentary pause ran to her daughter’s side, soon followed by her husband. The both knelt by their daughter’s side, Sora hugging her tightly. And together they looked on.

Keetmon cawed out, “You tried to hurt Sonya, and now Keetmon’s gonna hurt you back!” Keetmon spread its wings and opened its beak, “Sonic Squawk!” The word Squawk seemed to elongate into an actual squawk, rising until its pitch was ear-splitting. But the sound was strongest in the wave of vibrating air that seemed to emit from Keetmon’s beak, and strike DarkTyrannomon in the face. The dark dino brought its large claws to its ears and let out a pained roar. He turned, and ran from the scene.

Keetmon lightly lowered himself to the ground, then smiled and chirped at the Kamiya family, “He was nothing but a big baby, anyway.”

Willis began to look more and more worried as the minutes passed. A strange barrier of energy had formed around the pulsating Wendigomon. And even worse, the barrier which had at first been a very transparent white, was now a only semi-transparent grey, and was most likely going to become a solid black bubble before it was done.

“I have a hypothesis,” Izzy explained, “I believe that Wendigomon is unable to attain a state of digivolution as he is, so he is gathering energy from around himself by process of that shield. It is also my belief that one the shield has become opaque and surrounded him closely, his transformation will be complete.”

R.J. blinked, “So what you’re saying is...once that bubble thing is small enough to surround just him...he’ll digivolve?” Izzy nodded.

Willis sighed, “I just feel so helpless standing here, watching him. It’s like it’s been since the virus first infected Kokomon, the overwhelming feeling of helplessness... knowing there’s absolutely nothing I can do to help him. Well I can’t just stand idly by and watch this happen any longer. Terriermon!” Terriermon climbed to his feet from a sitting position, looked up at Willis staring down at him, and nodded. Willis looked towards Wendigomon and nodded again, “It’s about time I stopped watching, and started acting!”

Max looked down to his worn out friend Veemon, and they nodded to each other. R.J. and Elecmon nodded to each other as well. Then Nomandy, Mimi, and finally Izzy. Soon all of them were standing, ready to help.

Max spoke up, “I say, now that we’ve managed to buy ourselves some time, we try and hook up with the other members of the team. We’ll need everyone here if we want to be at full strength to handle any threat that virus may pose.”

Willis’s eyes widened, “Other...members?” He could barely believe it, “You mean there are even more of you guys?!”

Izzy sat, with his laptop sitting in front of him. As he typed away, he replied, “There are three more of us, to be precise.”

R.J. tilted his head, “Three more of us?”

Izzy nodded, “Yes. I’ve established contact with Kari, via her cellular phone’s email service, and she has told me that besides her and Billy, there is another digidestined with them in Japan. Surprisingly, it’s Tai and Sora’s five year old daughter, Sonya.”

Mimi looked horrified, “Five years old?! That’s awful! It was bad enough when we were plucked out of our normal lives when we were only ten. But a five year old! That’s just not right! I mean, even little Billy is ten years old. And until now he was the youngest in the group.”

“I know what you mean,” Max agreed, “But it just doesn’t make sense. Billy aside, the rest of us are either older teenagers, or adults. Why would such a small child be thrown into the mix at this point?”

“Uh, guys,” Nomandy interjected, “I hate to break up this stimulating conversation, but we’re wasting what little time we have before that thing,” he pointed, “contracts all the way.” The six of them set to work.

Izzy worked away at the computer terminal in Nomandy’s house; the others left to sit around and watch. Willis and Terriermon sat by the window, looking out at the slowly receding grey bubble. It won’t be long now, Willis thought to himself.

“Don’t worry, Willis.” Terriermon said comfortingly, “As soon as those other guys get here, we’ll be able to pop that bubble and finally save my brother.” Terriermon felt a hand slap over his mouth, holding it firmly shut.

Willis looked down on Terriermon with wide eyes and whispered, “Terriermon! Be quiet! If they find out the truth, if they find out...” He paused, and glanced through the doorway at the five of them huddled around the computer, “If they find out Wendigomon is your brother, they may not be so gung-ho about trying to stop him. Get it?” Terriermon looked at him with sad eyes. He sighed, “I don’t like it anymore than you do, buddy, but we both know very well there’s no stopping him any other way. We’ve tried everything else.” Again he paused, “I just hope that all of us together will be able to stop him.”

“Willis!” Max ran into the room, “It’s ready, the others are on their way!”

And so the nine digidestined stood, partner digimon at their sides. They faced the slowly shrinking force-field as it began to take on a deeper shade of grey, almost impossible to see through now. Max cried out, lifting his digivice forward, “After all this time, our full team has finally been assembled. I know we’re all tired from the battles we’ve endured today, but it’s time we ended this. Remember, Wendigomon may be an innocent being controlled by a virus, but we can’t afford to show any mercy this time.” He looked down to Veemon, who nodded. He looked behind him to the rest of the digidestined, all of them with determined faces nodding in unison. Max faced forward again, “Alright. Let’s show that virus the power of the digidestined!” A series of brilliant flashes of light filled the barren street, illuminating everything in site...

*Veemon, digivolve to...Veedramon!*

*Elecmon, digivolve to... Leomon!*

*Tentomon, digivolve to... Kabuterimon!*

*Palmon, digivolve to... Togemon!*

*Dramon, digivolve to... Airdramon!*

*Tapirmon, digivolve to... Wizardmon!*

*Salamon, digivolve to... Gatomon!*

*Terriermon, digivolve to... Gargomon!*

“Let’s do it!” Veedramon roared out, and he charged forward, followed by all the other champion digimon. Sonya looked to Keetmon and smiled, “I guess you gotta stay here ‘cuz you’re not all big and stuff yet.” Keetmon chirped a little disappointedly.

Veedramon took up the lead of the charge, and swung his fist forward, “Hammer Punch!” He punched the barrier as hard as he could. Next came Leomon. Leomon leaped into the air, high above the barrier. He reached behind and unsheathed his sword, and raised it above his head. He called out, “Beast Slash!” As he descended on the barrier, he swung the sword downwards, producing a splash of sparks and a metallic scraping sound as the sword slashed across the barrier.

Next up was Kabuterimon and Dramon. The both flew towards the barrier at top speed. Kabuterimon with his large horn forward, and Dramon with teeth bared. They came upon the barrier. Kabuterimon called out, “Beetle Horn Attack!” Kabuterimon rammed the barrier hard with his horn, but after only a few seconds of applying full force pressure, Kabuterimon was deflected by the sheer energy of the barrier. Dramon clamped his teeth hard on part of the barrier, “Dragon’s Bane!” But as quickly as Kabuterimon, Dramon was forced to release.

It was Togemon’s turn next. Mimi called out, “Smash that barrier into a million pieces, Togemon!” Izzy was slightly frightened by the all too familiar insane look in Mimi’s eyes, which she seemed to gain whenever they engaged in battle.

Togemon raised her fists, “Light Speed Jabbing!” Togemon then unleashed a barrage of punches on the barrier, even seeming to make it shake for a moment before it deflected her as well, knocking her on her bottom. Togemon groaned, “I think I broke something... but since cacti don’t have bones, I have no idea what.”

Now Gatomon and Wizardmon charged the shield. It was getting smaller and smaller; they would only have a few more minutes before it was too late. So Gatomon picked up the pace, and immediately started lashing out on the barrier, “Lightning Claw!” A series of gashes quickly appeared and dissipated with each slash, but over all the attack had no real effect as Gatomon was forced backwards from the barrier.

Wizardmon pointed his wand towards the barrier, and in began to glow a bluish color. He called out, “Magical Game!” and a blue magic beam streaked from the wand, crashing into the shrinking force-field’s side. But once the attack cleared, there was still no visible effect on the barrier.

“Gargomon!” Willis called out, sounding more desperate than ever. The barrier was only about ten feet in diameter now, in only a few short minutes it would be closed tightly around Wendigomon, its gathered energy forcing him to digivolve into some horrible twisted creature. Again Willis called, “Gargomon! It may not seem it, but they must have weakened it! You have to break it now! I know you can do it!”

Gargomon nodded back at Willis, and dashed at the barrier. He leaped up slightly, and swung his right arm gun as hard as he could, calling out “Bunny Pummel!” and smacking the barrier hard. The attack produced a streak of blue sparks in the air, but no more. Gargomon leaped back with the ensuing burst of force from the barrier, landing on his feet with guns pointed forward. He yelled out, “Gargo Barret!” A mass of green bullets of light shot from his guns for several seconds, Gargomon looking considerably determined. But still nothing. Gargomon sighed as he felt the rush of force blow his ears back.

“It really is no use...” Max sighed, and he looked at the worn out champions. If there was only a way to counter the barrier’s blow-back force so they could keep attacking it. But Max couldn’t see any way to pull that off.

Keetmon chirped, “Sonya, they really need my help. But I can’t help them unless you help me to be strong.” Sonya tilted her head, and Keetmon chirped a little resignedly. He tried to further explain, “Sonya, if I am going to digivolve, you need to have faith in me and realize the others need me to help.”

Sonya’s look of confusion slowly faded to a smile. She nodded, “I believe in Keetmon. Keetmon saved me, so he can save the digimon in the bubble!” Keetmon chirped happily.

Izzy sighed, and spoke softly, “I don’t think she realizes what we’re trying to do here completely. Even if we can smash that barrier, I’m afraid our only choice is to destroy Wendigomon, otherwise the virus will just try something else.”

Willis stared at the ground quietly, clearly concerned. Nomandy patted him on the shoulder, “I know it’s tough, man, but I guess this is what we have to do.” He paused for a moment, studying Willis’s sullen face. He whispered, “There’s something else your not telling us, isn’t there. Willis, if all of us are going to be some kind of team, you can’t keep secrets from the rest of us. If there’s something we need to know, you have to tell us.”

Willis slowly nodded, that sullen look never leaving his face. Slowly he looked up, and spoke up, “Guys, there’s something I need to tell all of you.”

Gargomon walked up behind him, and slowly nodded, patting him on the back with an oddly comforting gun. Willis straightened, and announced, “I haven’t been telling you guys everything. The truth is...” A final pause, and then he finished, “The truth is, Wendigomon is Gargomon’s brother” Everyone, even Sonya, gasped.

Everyone stood silent, even the digimon, all staring at Willis. Willis’s head hung low with shame. Finally, Max was the one to break the silence, “Well, in light of recent developments, I propose a change in our course of action. I say we smash that barrier, and drive that stupid virus out of Willis’s digimon once and for all!”

“Right, let’s delete that dirt-bag!” Izzy called out after a pause.

“That virus is gonna wish it was never programmed!” Kari rang in after Izzy. And one by one, all the digidestined exclaimed their approval.

Willis couldn’t believe his ears; even though the plan sounded impossible, they were still willing to help him. Maybe his dream would come true after all; maybe the beams of light would vanquish the darkness.

“Now only one problem remains,” R.J. interjected, “Just how do we go about smashing that stupid barrier? Not even a full pounding from our Digimon could destroy the thing.” Unfortunately, R.J. was right. Unless they thought of something very soon, Wendigomon would be force-digivolved by the virus. And if that happened, they might have no choice but to destroy Wendigomon anyway.

“My mommy always says,” Sonya of all people answered, “That if you’re scared, and you want to make the dark go away, all you need to do is turn on a light.” They all stared at the childish, but strangely profound little girl.

“Of course!” Izzy said, “It’s so simple, and it’s been in front of our faces all the time. I can’t believe we didn’t think of it before. When us original digidestined first entered the Digital World, we discovered our digivices possessed the ability to dispel darkness by emitting their light.” He smiled at Sonya, “Thank you Sonya, for pointing out what the rest of us were so oblivious to.” Sonya giggled.

And so the team turned to the nearly compacted barrier. Max held his digivice forward once more, “Very well then. If the light of the digivices is the answer, then let’s not waste any more time!” He closed his eyes, “Digivice, shine your light!” An orange aura began to build around the digivice, slowly spreading around Max’s body.

R.J. nodded, “It’s time that we end this. Digivice, shine your light!” This time a blue aura pulsed from R.J.’s digivice, slowly surrounding him.

Sonya smiled, and held her digivice up in imitation of Max and R.J., “It’s time to turn on the lights and wake up! Digivice, shine your light!” Slowly a red aura began to flow from the digivice, and surround Sonya.

Izzy proceeded to hold his digivice in the air, “I had to deal with this virus before, and I’ve always regretted not being able to aid more closely in its deletion. And now I think it’s just about time this virus got what’s coming to it. Digivice, shine your light!” A purple aura slowly began to bathe Izzy with light.

Mimi shook her fist, “I can’t stand when evil guys like you try to ruin everyone’s life. I’ve had to put up with it since I was young, but I’m not going to take it anymore!” She held out her digivice, and a green light appeared as she called out, “Digivice, shine your light!”

Nomandy nodded to Willis, “I’m glad we met Willis, because I am glad to be helping you. Remember that we’ll always be here to help you when you need it.” He turned to the barrier, “Digivice, shine your light!” A silver light poured forth from his digivice.

Billy shook his head, “I never did like it on TV when the bad guys tried to hurt the good guys. Now I’m living in a world not unlike those TV shows. But now, I can act on my dislike and stop the bad guys from hurting people. Digivice, shine your light!” Yellow energy emitted from his digivice, shining warmly on his face.

Kari looked over them all. The light was very bright indeed, but she knew it wasn’t yet complete. She raised her digivice, “I can’t stand darkness, and I’m not about to begin letting it have its way. Digivice, shine your light!” A pleasant pink light shined forth from her digivice.

Willis’s eyes were for the first time in a long time filled with wonder and happiness. This was exactly like he had hoped it would be. Now all the lights needed was the bright path he dreamed to lead them to their target. He looked to Gargomon, who had the same look on his face. Such happiness, such wonder... I’m going to make absolutely sure I get to see that look on Lopmon’s face again! He ran to the front of the group, and held up his digivice. He shouted, “It’s time this nightmare ends, and my dream comes true! I won’t live in darkness anymore!” Tears were running from his eyes; a mix of sadness for the past, and joy for what he knew was happening. He took in the warmth as the lights from the other digivices flowed to his, creating a brilliant ball of light above him. He called out, “Digivice, vanquish the darkness!”

The entire sky filled with bright rainbow light. It shown forth with brilliance outmatching that of the blocked out sun, and streaked forward to the barrier. But it didn’t only strike it, in completely engulfed it, making it impossible to see anything but the light. It was the most beautiful thing Willis had ever seen. And then, with one final flash, the light faded away.

Willis slowly opened his eyes. He was still standing with his digivice held upwards, but he felt as if he had been asleep for hours. He looked into the sky; the bright sun had returned, bringing pleasant warmth with it. He turned his head forward, and he couldn’t believe his eyes. Standing there was a little Digimon, very similar to Terriermon. But instead it was brown in color, with pink designs instead of green. Its collar design also varied in shape, more like a shirt collar. And on its head, instead of Terriermon’s one spike, were three. He hadn’t seen this digimon for far too long; Lopmon.

Terriermon, at some point having reverted to his rookie form, dashed forward to meet his brother. Willis stood, amazed. Nomandy patted his back, “Come on, buddy, let’s go see your digimon.” Willis smiled, speechless, and ran to meet up with his long lost friend. But Lopmon and Terriermon weren’t the only friends with him that day. No, he knew that from that day on he would never want for friends again.
